What you need to DoorDash by e-bike
To deliver for DoorDash by e-bike you need to be 18 or older (19 in several states, 21 in California), with a smartphone, a government ID and a Social Security number for a background check. That’s the lot — no driver’s licence, car insurance, motor-vehicle report or registration for a bike. You’ll want an insulated hot bag (some merchants require one), and DoorDash says a helmet is required by law, with lights and a lock advised.

What you need to sign up
- You’re 18 or older — 19 in several states, 21 in California
- A smartphone running the Dasher app
- A government photo ID (a driver’s licence isn’t required for bike)
- A Social Security number, for a Checkr background check
DoorDash runs the background check through Checkr using your SSN — but skips the motor-vehicle report for bikes.
Bike vs car — what you can skip
Delivering by bike drops the three things that make car sign-up a hassle: the licence, the insurance and the driving-record check.
| Requirement | By bike / e-bike | By car |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum age | 18+ (more in some states) | 18+ (more in some states) |
| Smartphone | Required | Required |
| Government photo ID | Any photo ID | Driver’s licence |
| SSN + background check | Required | Required |
| Driver’s licence | Not needed | Required |
| Auto insurance | Not needed | Required |
| Motor-vehicle report | Not run | Run |
Age can be higher than 18 by state — 19 in Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Texas and others, and 21 in California. It’s the same floor whether you ride or drive.
Gear you’ll actually want
-
Insulated hot bag
Some merchants won’t hand over an order without one, and DoorDash backs that up. Any insulated bag works — DoorDash sells a branded one, but doesn’t require it.
-
A helmet
DoorDash says a helmet is required by law when you ride, and many states and cities do require one — so for most riders it’s not optional, and it’s cheap protection either way.
-
Lights and a lock
Front and rear lights so you’re seen, even by day, and a solid lock — DoorDash advises locking up even for a minute. A rack or basket carries the bag.
The e-bike itself
- DoorDash doesn’t set e-bike rules — your city and state do. Most Class 2 and Class 3 e-bikes are street-legal for delivery.
- In New York City, e-bikes and their batteries must be UL 2849 / UL 2271 certified, and since October 2025 they’re capped at 15 mph on city streets.
- A throttle bike that beats the legal e-bike speed can count as a moped — which then needs registration, a licence and insurance. A bike that stays within the e-bike rules avoids that.
