How the Austin Energy E-Ride rebate works
Austin Energy’s E-Ride rebate pays up to $600 back on a new e-bike — or up to $1,300 if you’re on its income-qualified Customer Assistance Program. It’s a reimbursement, not an instant discount: you buy first, then claim within 60 days. The amount is tiered by price — you only reach $600 (or $1,300) on a bike that costs $2,000 or more. You must be an Austin Energy electric customer and buy from an approved local dealer.

What you get back, by price
Flat amounts by price band — not a percentage. A bike under $500 doesn’t qualify.
| Bike price | Standard | Customer Assistance Program |
|---|---|---|
| $500 – $999 | $200 | $300 |
| $1,000 – $1,999 | $400 | $700 |
| $2,000 or more | $600 | $1,300 |
The same tiers cover electric scooters, mopeds and other two- or three-wheel e-rides — and a business fleet tier runs higher still. Funding is limited and first-come.
Three things to get right
-
It’s money back, not money off
You pay full price up front, then apply within 60 days and wait about 6–8 weeks for a check. Budget as if there’s no rebate, then treat it as money returned.
-
$600 only on a $2,000+ bike
The rebate is tiered: $200 on a $500–$999 bike, $400 from $1,000, and $600 once you hit $2,000. The CAP tiers run $300 / $700 / $1,300. A cheaper bike earns the smaller number.
-
No UL or class rule here
Unlike most programs, Austin Energy doesn’t require UL 2849 or a bike class — just a spec sheet showing a motor and battery. Handy, but a UL-certified bike is still the safer buy.
On the Customer Assistance Program? It’s up to $1,300
Austin Energy’s CAP is its discount plan for income-qualified customers. If you’re enrolled, the e-bike rebate roughly doubles — $300, $700 or $1,300 by price, instead of $200/$400/$600. Same bike, same dealer, far more back.
Who qualifies, and how to claim it
What needs to be true
- You get your electricity from Austin Energy
- The e-bike is new, with a spec sheet showing a motor and battery
- You bought it from a dealer on Austin Energy’s approved list (a local Austin storefront)
- For the higher tier, you’re enrolled in Austin Energy’s Customer Assistance Program (CAP)
Getting paid back
- Buy a new e-bike from an approved Austin dealer.
- Apply within 60 days of purchase, with your receipt and the bike’s spec sheet.
- Get a check in about 6–8 weeks. You can claim up to 3 E-Ride rebates per fiscal year (Oct 1 – Sep 30).
The Customer Assistance Program has its own income-based enrollment through Austin’s city utilities — Austin Energy’s rebate page links to it but doesn’t list the income limits, so check there before counting on the higher tier.
Elsewhere in Texas
City of Denton — up to $750
- 50% of the price, up to $750, as a reimbursement
- For Denton Municipal Electric customers inside the city limits
- Requires a UL 2849-certified bike (unlike Austin Energy)
San Antonio — $1,000, income-qualified
- A $1,000 voucher pilot run by the City, not CPS Energy
- Income-qualified only, and grant-funded in limited rounds
- Redeemed at a designated vendor, not a reimbursement
There’s no statewide Texas e-bike rebate, and no federal one. CPS Energy, Houston, Dallas, El Paso Electric, Fort Worth and Plano don’t offer one either.
A reimbursement means you pay first.
Because Austin Energy pays you back later, you front the full price — so the up-front cost is the same whether or not a rebate is coming. If that’s the hurdle, financing spreads it out, and the rebate check lands while you’re paying it down.
What Austin riders ask
How much is the Austin Energy e-bike rebate?
Up to $600 back on a new e-bike, or up to $1,300 if you’re on Austin Energy’s income-qualified Customer Assistance Program. The amount is tiered by price: $200, $400 or $600 standard (or $300, $700, $1,300 on CAP) as the bike moves from $500 to $2,000 or more.
Is the Austin Energy rebate instant or a reimbursement?
A reimbursement. You buy the bike first, apply within 60 days with your receipt and the bike’s spec sheet, and get a check in about 6–8 weeks. There’s no discount at the register.
Who qualifies for the Austin Energy E-Ride rebate?
Austin Energy electric customers who buy a new e-bike from an approved local dealer. The higher CAP tier requires enrollment in Austin Energy’s Customer Assistance Program. You can claim up to 3 E-Ride rebates per applicant per fiscal year, first-come while funds last.
Does the Austin Energy rebate require a UL 2849 e-bike?
No. Unlike most US programs, Austin Energy doesn’t require UL 2849 certification or a specific bike class — only a spec sheet showing the bike has a motor and battery. A UL-certified bike is still the safer choice, and other programs do require it.
Does the rebate cover e-scooters and mopeds too?
Yes. The E-Ride rebate uses the same price tiers for electric two- and three-wheel bikes, scooters, motorcycles, mopeds and segways bought new from an approved dealer.
Are there other e-bike rebates in Texas?
A few. The City of Denton offers 50% up to $750 to its electric customers, and San Antonio runs an income-qualified $1,000 voucher pilot through the city (not CPS Energy). There’s no statewide Texas e-bike rebate, and most Texas utilities don’t offer one.
